Logically, it wasn't that big a deal.

But it hit hard and felt like a big deal...

That's a trigger.

TRIGGERS ARE OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD

We've Been Taught that the Goal is to Control or Eliminate

That's not only impossible - it's a missed opportunity.

Triggers aren't the problem. They're information.

Here's what's actually happening - StoryShift 101.

Our emotions have a job.

They take in everything around us - sensory, intellectual, emotional, and relational. They process it, organize it, then deliver the wisdom and guidance we need. When they're done, they move through and out of our bodies.

But there's often a problem...

We've been taught that some emotions are good and others are bad...

Some are positive and others are negative...

So we suppress, reject, or push those aside. Or we try to stay positive.

The result? Those emotions can't complete their job.

But they take that job very seriously and won't give up. Soooo...

They get stuck. Trapped.

Stuck emotions behave like a short circuit -

fritzing, building pressure, looking for any way to get our attention.

That's what a trigger is.

Not a weakness or flaw.

Just an emotion with a job to finish trying to get our attention and complete its job.

And we did it to ourselves....

When you learn to work work WITH that signal,

the short circuit stops fritizing. .

a word about tentacles

...because triggers are not neatly organized into layers

Picture a tree with deep tangled roots. Only those above the ground are visible, but you know more lie beneath.

Or an octopus tucked into the rocks. You can only see the arms that are exposed. Remove one, and another becomes visible that had been hidden behind it.

In both cases - same creature, different arms.

 

If you do this work and find yourself triggered again by something that feels familiar, that doesn't mean the process isn't working. It means a different tentacle has surfaced.

A different facet of the same wound, or a different wound that feels similar —

either way, it only became visible once the first one cleared enough to reveal it.

 

This is actually good news. It means you're not going in circles. You're exposing more.

identify the feeling underneath the reaction

....and let it do what it was always meant to do...

the charge dissipates.

The short circuit stops fritzing. The story built on that stuck feeling stops running the show.

by addressing the root emotion

...you're not just addressing one story.

You're neutralizing the emotional charge(s) connected to that same root, often more than you knew was there.

here's the thing...

YOU don't have to keep getting blindsided

Once you undertsand what triggers actually are,

a clear process for working with them

instead of against them will feel completely normal and natural.

A reaction may still happen, but now you know what it means.

and now you know what to do with it!
